Evaluation of Sound Recording

For the sound recording piece we had lots of initial ideas that where all based around a question and answer session. As a group of three at first, we discussed topics and ideas that would make good listening for the audience, and how we could get the questions and answers to promote more discussion. Some ideas we thought of were; the war in Iraq, the war in Israel and Palestine, Government cuts, and University fee’s.  These are all topics with a good focal point and a good for and against argument, which was the basis for the piece. We then decided we could make it into an interview based argument on a radio show, with one person for opinion and one against.

We then discussed how we could relate each topic and make a for and against argument for each, but we at this point where not sure on the topic we were going to choose. As there were three of us in the group, we decided to look at recent events or issues that have caused controversy in the public eye. One of these was the Sky sports pundits being dismissed for sexist remarks toward females. This we thought, would be a good basis for our discussion, and a good topic to do a for and against interview.

I researched online for articles and videos relating to the event. I found many different articles and some videos with the main content of what was said by the accused. I also then found counter arguments, in articles and in video too, to try and gain a good basis for me to formulate my questions, with a fair balance of questioning towards the interviewed people.

These questions where formulated from the research found, and the interview looked like it would begin to take shape.

At one stage, our group became a five instead of a three, which meant we could have based two people for each discussion, with one interviewer.

We had booked a room for the recording on the Monday, but only I and one other from the group had turned up, so we rebooked the room for the following day to record the piece. On that day, four out of the five of us turned up, and we had not structured the order of our questions yet, and we also had to re assign roles for the interview.

The set up for the equipment took some time, and also we had to write an introduction to the radio show, which I did. After assigning roles, I was the interviewer, and two people where to be interviewed, and one record and set up the equipment in the studio. The final aspect of our team was good. I enjoyed partaking in the interview, and the questions and answers that where formulated where good for an against arguments, that gave good insight into the chosen topic, and branched out to discuss the concept of the issue in further detail. This I feel was one of the most positive things about the recording, as it gave it a real edge and sharpness, with a good listening aspect for the audience. It was concise yet affective, and it was a positive experience.

If I were to work in the same situation again, I would think more time planning, and a better use of the time to rework the content as we were going would have made it more time effective, and clearer on what we were to do next. Overall I think the recording was a success, and gave a good insight and practice into planning and partaking in a radio show with the recording equipment.

Today we did the recording of our piece. we decided to go with the Question and Answer session based interview. One person of he group did not turn up, but this did not affect the recording too much. We had lots of attempts to get it right, and it still needs piecing together and cutting. I am going to now do an evaluation of how it went and rewrite the transcript for the recording.

I have researched and developed some questions for the sound piece at home, these are based on articles that I had found that I feel would justify the interview. we were supposed to be recording today, but only 2 of us turned up, so we have booked the room out for tomorrow instead, and we will hopefully get a recoding. I will then collate all my work together for the hand in on Friday.

Ideas and reserch

It turned out there are now five people in the group, the more the merrier, but only two of us turned up to this session today. We did not have much to go on or work with apart from a bit of research. We had found some articles in the daily mail relating to this, and also a video from ITV's loose women where they gave both a for and against argument themselves. Our idea is to develop questions based on this,that could be as much answered in the for or the against view. As only two of us turned up, we decided that if this where to occur again, we have a back up plan, to interview random people with the same questions, and gain as much content as possible, as we are going to put this together next week.
My task is to develop some questions for next week that would be suitable for the interview, and we will then take a mixture of questions I have developed, and another member of the group, and use these in the interview.

Sound piece

For the sound piece, this is a bit of a nemesis for me really, as I have no experience using any equipment or software prior to this degree. But I'm willing to give it a go. We were assigned into groups, at first there were three of us, but these groups changed as people did not turn up. Within the group of three we brainstormed ideas and had talks with the lecturer regarding our ideas, and the outcome he would like from us. As this is only a short part of the course, we had to make a decision and go with an idea. So we had a thought to do the sexism row, with a for and against argument based discussion on whether the presenters should have been sacked or not. This I felt we had strong links and evidence to support our five minute piece.
