Five Star Evaluation of: Football Team Websites

Manchester United:

Criteria;
Navigation Layout - Has a splash page at first entry to the site, this gives options of extra functions such as shopping, hospitality and membership. It has an enter website click, and takes you straight to the homepage with Team news and other options. It is laid out with options down the left hand side of screen, and text is a good size. Content is concise and sectioned into appropriate columns and rows of information. It also has a log in and search box.

Relevance of Content - The content is current, up to date with team news for the next game, and after previous game such as injuries to players. It has links to players’ views and interviews with some video and picture content. It has match reports and a message board for fans to comment.

Functionality - The site is clear and set out with appropriate headings. You can navigate around the homepage without having to use the toolbar keys, although this must be used to access the splash page again. It has details of their sponsor if you click the top toolbar, although this is not clearly apparent. The site has various language options including Japanese, Korean and Spanish, and this option is accessible from both the splash page and home page.

Colours - What is to be expected, white, red and black, official current Manchester united colours. The text is dark on a light grey background to avoid plain white colours. The site keeps the affect of Manchester United without being overpowering with red, which could be an off putting colour on the web.

Overall Star Rating - The site is a good relevant football site, it has good key functions and plenty of options for the user. It gets a good **** 1/2

Chelsea F.C:

Criteria;
Navigation Layout - Has two sets of tabs along the top such as Chelsea T.V online, and the shop, which would change the face of the homepage. Other tabs keep the same information as the top tabs, and also news, players and membership tabs. It is easy to navigate in between both tabs without the toolbar keys. The site also has a feedback tab on the right hand side of the page which open a small new window where users can submit their ideas for improving the site.

Relevance of Content - It has current and breaking news, also a blog space where post from website updates are placed with a time of how long ago it was posted. Has a link to Sky Sports from the top of the home page. Gives information on next game and previous games, and has a poll fro the users.

Functionality - It is easy to use, the tabs are easily legible and structured, and it spreads the information out so that it is not overcrowded with text. Pictures and videos are easily accessible, and the site could be used by a non frequent web user capably.

Colours - Typically blue with a white secondary colour, blue naturally lends itself to the web and also usually promotes discussion.

Overall Star Rating - From feedback of regular users it seems they would like more functions, but they do take these into account, as one suggestion is being updated, a good **** 1/2

F.C Barcelona:

Criteria;
Navigation Layout - The site is laid out with tabs clear and visible, in English down the left hand side of the page. It is structured from the top to bottom of the page in sectors. It has adverts down the side in columns, and sponsors at the bottom of the page. Tabs can be easily played in between without using the toolbar. It has only one page of content, which is good for quick accessibility.

Relevance of Content - Content is up to date, with previews for next up coming game. It has posts and interviews from players and short videos of interviews. It has a photo gallery on the homepage. The page has other sports the club and the City are associated with such as basketball, handball, and roller hockey.

Functionality - It is very easy to use, has clear visual tabs and icons. It is not crowded with information and text, and gives the user options to go through deeper into content through tabs. The site also can be translated into different languages.

Colours - Good use of blue contrasting the white, the text is the Barcelona purple on white background, but the text is not fluorescent or off putting. A dark grey background colour surrounds the page, but does make the information and text look slightly condensed.

Overall Star Rating - has everything a football site should have and more, but that is maybe its downfall. Still a good ****

Leyton orient:

Criteria;
Navigation Layout - has an enter page with a few different options such as tickets and membership. Has an enter link to go to the homepage. The homepage is cluttered with text, and can be confusing to the eye about what tab will open up the area the user would like to look at.

Relevance of Content - The content on this page is compacted in to four sections which are; official partners, match coverage, features, and highlights. It shows news of other leagues games, and also other options from the clubs official partners such as betting and casino tabs. It also has a video link in the top right hand corner of the page containing other goals and action from other leagues games. The site has an 'Orient Player' icon for viewing online. It also has a latest news column with fairly up to date content.

Functionality - The site homepage is compact with options. The tabs along the top are clearly visible and have clear headings. Although the tabs are clear, it would not be clear of how to find a particular aspect a user may be looking for, without it opening up another window.

Colour - It has a red background colour, with a mixture of red, white and dark text, with dates in red, and subheadings dark. Highlighted icons show with red square and white text.

Overall Star Rating - It has most key features that you would expect, but can be uneasy on the eye with the layout and colour, overall a decent ***

West Ham United:

Criteria;
Navigation Layout - Has a splash page with information about the clubs next game. Clicking on the box brings up a new window which takes you to the box office part of the site. Underneath the splash box there is small text saying click here. Homepage has tabs all along the top of the page, is fairly minimalistic and has bullet points for main headlines.

Relevance of Content - the content has updated team news and video links. Has the up coming match information and their last match statistics. Has a brief table review of team in and around them in the league.

Functionality - The site is very easy to use, it has clear headings and is navigate able without using toolbar key. It has clear links to content and has a search box for queries.

Colours - It has a black background colour, with a white main content background. The text is mainly black and white, but the traditional West Ham Claret is visible in some text tab menu at the top.

Overall Star Rating - This site is clear and concise, but lacks draw ability in to it. A user may get a little board after a short time. Still a good *** 1/2
